Car Rental in South Tenerife: What You Really Need to Know Before You Go
First-time visitors to Tenerife almost always face a dilemma: is it worth renting a car, or can you get around using only public transport and organised transfers? The answer depends on what you want to do, but if your goal is to explore the island without schedule constraints, having a vehicle at your disposal completely changes the trip.
We have been managing our experiences in South Tenerife since 2014 and, talking every day with travelers, we've noticed there are some practical details about car rental that nobody explains on generalist booking sites. Here is what you really need to know before getting behind the wheel.
Southern Roads and the TF-1 Highway
The backbone of South Tenerife is the TF-1, the highway running along the coast connecting Tenerife South Airport (TFS) all the way to Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas and Costa Adeje, before continuing westward. It's a modern, smooth and free infrastructure. There are no tolls on the island, which makes getting around by car much simpler than in many other European destinations.
The coastal stretch is easy to drive, but things change rapidly when you head inland. If you decide to drive up toward Teide National Park, the roads become winding, with significant slopes and continuous curves. You don't need an off-road vehicle, but a car with a bit more engine power than the base displacement will save you from struggling too much on the steepest climbs.
Local Companies vs. Major International Brands
On global search engines you will find the major rental brands, but several well-established local companies also operate in Tenerife. Often the difference isn't just in the price, but in the contractual terms. Many local car rentals offer formulas with comprehensive casco insurance included with zero excess (often indicated as "all-inclusive" without credit card surprises), whereas major brands tend to block very high security deposits unless you purchase their extra coverages.
Our advice is to carefully read the fuel policy (the full-to-full formula is always the most transparent) and check whether child seats or an additional driver are included or calculated as daily extras.
Parking in the South: Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos
In major tourist areas like Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos, finding street parking can become an exercise in patience, especially during high season or in the evening hours near the most popular restaurants. Many hotels offer indoor parking (always check if there's a fee), and in shopping centres or public areas there are paid parking lots with generally accessible rates.
A local tip: if you see white lines, parking is free; blue lines indicate a paid zone (regulated by a parking meter); yellow lines indicate an absolute no-parking zone, and local authorities do not hesitate to tow vehicles away.
When a Car Isn't Needed (and When It's Essential)
If your stay is focused entirely on resort relaxation, Costa Adeje's beaches or specific excursions like catamarans for whale watching (where hotel pickup is already included), a rental car might just sit in the parking lot for days.
If instead you want to explore inland villages, reach less-trodden trails, drive up to Teide independently or discover hidden coves along the west coast, a rental car becomes the ideal tool to experience the island at your own pace.
In our catalogue we also offer a car and scooter rental service with a modern fleet and dedicated support, designed precisely for those who prefer a direct local point of contact without queuing at airport desks.
